The Membership of MSIA Canada (An Ecumenical Church)

The purpose of this note is to explain membership in MSIA Canada. Unlike the Mother Church in Los Angeles, when the Church was established in Canada under a federal charter, the founders were required to provide a definition of membership in the corporation. The definition as it is stated in By-law 1 of the Canadian Church is as follows:

Membership Conditions

Subject to the articles, there shall be two classes of members in the Corporation, namely, Class A members and Class B members. The board of directors of the Corporation may, by resolution, approve the admission of the members of the Corporation. Members may also be admitted in such other manner as may be prescribed by the board by resolution. The following conditions of membership shall apply:

    Class A Members

  1. Class A voting membership shall be available only to individuals ordained as Ministers in the Church of The Movement of Spiritual Awareness, who are in good standing as a Minister, registered with the Ministerial Board of Canada, and who have applied for and have been accepted for Class A voting membership in the Corporation.
  2. The term of membership of a Class A voting member shall be annual, subject to renewal in accordance with the policies of the Corporation.
  3. As set out in the articles, each Class A voting member is entitled to receive notice of, attend and vote at all meetings of members and each such Class A voting member shall be entitled to one (1) vote at such meetings.

    Class B Members

  4. Class B non-voting membership shall be available only to individuals subscribing to MSIA discourses, whose subscription is active, who have applied for and have been accepted for Class B non-voting membership in the Corporation.
  5. The term of membership of a Class B non-voting member shall be annual, subject to renewal in accordance with the policies of the Corporation.
  6. Subject to the Act and the articles, a Class B non-voting member shall not be entitled to receive notice of, attend or vote at meetings of the members of the Corporation.

The founders of the Canadian Church created these two classes of membership on the belief that once one had chosen to be a Minister in MSIA, there was a commitment to build the Church as a vehicle of service in Canada and thus should be a member of the Church; and on the belief that someone who had chosen to take discourses could simply choose to work with the Traveler without any desire for undertaking a Ministry, and thus with less desire for actively creating a Church in Canada. However, to permit discourse subscribers to be aware of the activities of the Church in Canada, it was felt that the option of an associate membership should be open to those interested.

Further to the Membership Conditions statement from By-law 1, it should be noted that an ordained Minister of MSIA also has the option to stand for office and, if elected, to hold office in the Canadian Church and that as a general rule, the Secretary of MSIA Canada will treat all discourse subscribers as members unless the individual chooses not to join.
